We follow the national road to Rethymno and turn right to Kalami behind the fortress Itzedin and the shade of ancient Aptera. We wonder the bay of Souda and the wonderful Venetian fortress in the homonymous islet and we head for Kalyves.
Before the village on the right we follow the road to Stylos with its fresh springs and the enormous plane trees and the excellent, from architectural view, church of Panagia. From Stylos we go uphill to Provarma.
This route goes through the villages of the foot of the Madara. These villages have the aroma of Crete and a wild beauty. From Provarma, in which there are several venetian buildings, the road rises to Samona with an excellent view to the villages of Apokoronas and the Cretan Sea.
Beautiful houses with flourishing gardens adorn the village. From here we continue to Chiliomodou, where you perceive the endlessness of Crete as you look at Psiloritis, Lefka Ori and the blue sea . Going downhill to Kyriakosela we will mee the unique architectural style of St. Nikolaos’ church.
Our route continues as we cross the Ramne, a village with large livestock farming activity, Pemonia, where beautiful handmade traditional furniture is made, and arrives in Fre. Don’t forget to walk the small streets of the village and take a secret look into the yards.
The architecture of the village wil transfer you to another time. Return through Fre and Agious Pantes and from the old national road, with wonderful view to the mountains and the Machairous, before you arrive in Nio Horio and Armenous. From there to Kalyven and finally arrival in Chania.
