The Municipality of Sitia, in cooperation with the Sitia Development Organization and the Technological Educational Institute of Crete (Department of Nutrition and Dietetics) is organising a festival entitled: “Local Produce: Nutritional and Therapeutic Properties”. During the festival there are cooking demonstrations and tastings of local produce from Sitia and the areas with which it has developed cooperative relationships: the Lassithi Plateau, Chios and the area of Mount Troodos in Cyprus. There are also demonstrations of Cretan cooking by well-known chefs, who have creative proposals for incorporating local products in modern cuisine.

Other interesting events surrounding the main festival include informative seminars to help the effective promotion of local products, visits to model production and standardised preparation facilities, artistic events, traditional music and dance events, exhibitions of photography and painting, a graffiti competition, demonstrations of personal care and health products, interactive musical and theatrical games for children, and many more.

Local hotels and catering establishments in the city take a particularly active part in the events, with special price offers, and unique treats for visitors. The Municipality of Sitia and the Sitia Development Organization extend an open invitation to participate in this great celebration of Sitia’s local produce, with the myriad aromas, flavours, music and dancing that flood the city’s main square.

Media representatives, including those from specialist magazines in Greece and abroad, will be attending the event and helping Sitia take its rightful place on the global culinary map and in the international food and drink markets. The festival takes place as part of the project “TOPON EFORIA – Nutritional products and sustainable development in the cooperating regions” of the Cross-border Cooperation Programme CBC ‘GREECE-CYPRUS 2007-2013’.
