Praisos – Agios Spiridonas – Papagiannades – Lithines

Next to Praisos, the last cradle of the Eteo-cretans, you go in the direction of Aghios Spyridonas, where you can enjoy your early coffee or your tea at the traditional café. Walking a little more southern, you walk past Sklavi, a village that was allegedly colonized by Nikiforos Fokas. The route continues for Papagiannades from where you gradually descend towards Lithines. A village of exemplary neatness with thechurch Panagia Lithinon, which lends more prestige to the area and highlights the flourishment of the byzantine iconography, through the artistic style of the Cretan School. From here, you can move to Sitia, or Makry Gialo – Ierapetra or Aghios Nikolaos, even by long distance buses. The region that unfolds before one’s eyes during that itinerary is worth for touring. For those interested in botanology, March and May are ideal; August and September one can live the experience of wine-grape harvesting; December and January are the months when you can participate in agricultural activities such as olive harvesting, which takes place during the religious celebration of Christmas, New Year’s Day and Epiphany.
