Piskokefalo-Papagianades-Chandras-Praisos

Routes with Car or Motorbike

Lassithi

After breakfast in Sitia, take the southern route through the villages of Piskokefalo, Episkopi and Papagianades ascending to the plateau of Armenochandrados.

A stop at Etia with its famous dwelling of Demetzo (the Dei Mezzo family) is worthwhile. The village of Armeni dominates to the east, set amongst vineyards and close to the village of Chandras. The village of Voila, dating from the middle ages, used to be the center of control of the surrounding huge cultivated area. Following the asphalt route to the northwest, to the left after Chandras, ascend to Nea Pressos. In this region there are caves for swallows and an ancient quarry on the site of “Kionia”.

Further down before Aghios Spiridonas, the dirt road to the right will lead you to the ancient Praisos. Beyond Aghios Spiridonas (and its traditional coffee shop), down below in the riverbed there is a water mill dating from 1471,called the “Thigeto of Milos”.The ascending asphalt roadway leads to Aghios Georgios (Tourtoli) and turning to the right, brings you back to the sunshine of Sitia. Apart from your own personal agenda, the organized excursions from Sitia and Voila, a stop at the monastery of Aghia Sofia and the traditional coffee shops of Armeni and Chandras are worth considering. The traditional way of life here revolves around the production of olive oil and wine and the cultivation of crops and other farm produce required for each household.
