Nikos Kazantzakis Museum

Heraklion

Where the wine roads meet the words of Nikos Kazantzakis and the tranquil Cretan landscape merges with authentic hospitality, a museum dedicated to the great writer was created in 1983. Myrtia of Heraklion (just 11 kilometres from the archaeological site of Knossos) is the ancestral village of Nikos Kazantzakis and the founder of the Museum, stage and costume designer George Anemogiannis. The Museum is housed in the area where the Anemogiannis family home was located, as well as a small house belonging to relatives of Kazantzakis.

In a space where light and shadow alternate, 650 exhibits are presented with a contemporary look and aesthetic vision, highlighting the timelessness and universality of Nikos Kazantzakis’ way of thinking by offering visitors a fascinating journey through the life, words and reflections of the author.

In the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition, visitors are given the opportunity to get to know the author’s personality through his letters and diaries, his personal belongings, souvenirs from his travels, rare photographs and models of sets and costumes from performances of his works, as well as rare audiovisual material and works of art inspired by his literary world.
