Continuing you reach Kalamafka, built in the midst of isolated crags on top of which perch tiny white churches. Situated amidst greenery and springs, this hilltop village commands the region. In olden times, the road passing through Kalamafka used to connect the Plateaus of Lasithi and Katharo with Ierapetra.
It has been speculated that Kalamafka is built on the site of the ancient city of Larisas. Because of the large spring in the village, over the centuries many water mills have been in operation here, some even until today, which have been mentioned in Venetian title documents.
Continuing along the asphalt road eastwards, you meet the villages of Prina and Meseleri and heading further south, the villages of Makrilia and Kentri. Along this route, there are alternative pathways to be used in case of rock slides. In Kalamafka, Prina and Meseleri there are some religious monuments, churches and monasteries that are worth visiting. Also worth mentioning here is the fact that this area has geological interest as well as fossil remains.
