An area of outstanding natural beauty beginning at the village of Ano Asites. The E4 European Long Distance Path runs down the gorge, which contains rare plant and animal species protected under European law.
Specifically, there are 80 species of plant (four of them protected), 24 species of animal (11 protected) and 16 species of bird, of which eight are protected. There is also a cave 100 metres deep, which is home to two species of bat protected by the same EEC directive. At the entrance to the gorge is the chapel of Agios Antonios (St Anthony).
