Caves

Chania

The cave of “Agia Sofia” is at the western walls of the gorgo of Topolia, at a distance of 47 km from the city of Chania. It consists of two rooms on different levels.

The cave is almost circular with a diameter of 50 m. Its height is up to 20 m at certain points. Its entrance has an opening of 25 m and on its left edge is the small church of Agia Sofia, with dimensions 6Χ3 m.
The cave is of archeological and historical interest.

P. Faure mentions that he spotted characteristic sherds of the neolithic, classic and Roman times. In 1963 S. Hood discovered a clay statuette, which dates back to the end of the 4th century B.C., as well as pottery from the neolithic, early Minoan, late Minoan, classical, hellenistic and Roman times.
