An area abundant with pine trees, dotted with caves and shrines envelops you as far as Prina. After a stop for coffee, you can visit the remarkable Byzantine churches with their original architectural components. The gravel road leads to the north, amid pine trees with clusters of beehives, and through orchards and almond trees arriving at the village of Kroustas.
The village is built at a height of 500m in a magnificent natural setting with a panoramic view of Mirambelo Bay. In Kroustas there are tavernas serving traditional Cretan dishes where you can enjoy an original meal at midday. On the return journey the route follows the road to Prina for a short distance (approx.2km) and on your left you can see the Byzantine chapel of Aghios Ioannis in the area of Lakki. Beyond the church, descend the gravel road which will lead you down to the riverbed of Kalo Potami and the church of Aghios Nikolaos.
After a short distance, continuing along the road that runs parallel to the river, you arrive at the settlement of Pirgos, with its well-supplied springs. One kilometre to the left leads you the national road that takes you back to Aghios Nikolaos.
