Chania

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is housed in an iconic modern building of approximately 6,000m2 in the historic district of Chalepa, offering a panoramic view of Chania and the coastal front. The permanent collection of the museum is presented in three halls on the ground floor and one on the first floor and showcases the archaeological wealth of the Regional Unit of Chania with about 3,500 ancient objects.

The exhibition is divided into two major sections: In the first one, finds from the Late Neolithic and the Bronze Age (Minoan period) are presented. The second exhibits antiquities from the Iron Age (Historical times). The finds are presented by excavation sets and thematic units. The collections include Minoan finds from the city of Chania, prehistoric finds from caves, Minoan finds from various areas of the Prefecture, finds from tombs of the Geometric period, finds of the Historical period from the city of Chania and from various other towns of the Prefecture, coins, jewelry (prehistoric and historical), sculptures, inscriptions, stelae, mosaics.

In the year 2000, the interesting collection of Konstantinos, Marika, and Kyriakos Mitsotakis was donated to the Archaeological Museum of Chania, which is displayed on the first floor.

The Museum has workshops for the conservation of ceramics, metal objects, coins, frescoes, mosaics, and a chemical laboratory, while for the convenience of visitors there is an exhibition-sales room of the Archaeological Resources Fund and a café.
