The Archaeological Museum of Messara is located at the western end of the archaeological site of Gortyna and opened to the public in 2023. Its permanent collection aims to highlight the influence of the morphology of the Messara region (“Messara”: amidst the mountains) on the development of human civilization over time.
The exhibition is developed in three halls, with a presentation of the main settlements and their evolution in the three major historical periods: prehistoric times, the Greco-Roman period and Christian times.
Within an area of 3 hectares and with a total area of 2,900m2, the Museum includes approximately 900m2 of main exhibition spaces, an inner courtyard used for exhibition and educational purposes, an event and projection room, a temporary exhibition hall, a conservation rooms, a shop, and a refreshment stall.
